Our Mission & History

The mission of the Buncombe County Schools Foundation is to establish partnerships with local individuals, businesses, corporations, and other foundations for the purpose of supporting education in the Buncombe County School System.

What is the Buncombe County Schools Foundation?
The Buncombe County Schools Foundation was established in 1984 to assist the Buncombe County School System with needs that cannot be met through regular funding methods.  The Foundation makes continual efforts to provide money and in-kind donations for innovative and creative programs, student scholarships, teacher development and additional teacher requests that otherwise may not be funded.  The BCS Foundation provides the tax credit for our donors of all of our schools.

What does the Foundation support?
The BCS Foundation has three major initiatives for funding. They are Classroom Grants, Teacher and Employee Development and Student Scholarships for graduating seniors.

What do we do? We give money to teachers with great ideas! And…..
· Provide unique, educational opportunities in BCS classrooms.
· Encourage middle and high school students to explore career options in the sciences and engineering fields through programs such as Project Lead the Way.
· Provide funding for teacher travel to countries such as China and Costa Rica to support global initiatives for dual and single immersion programs.
Match deserving students to local scholarships.
· Enable and encourage high school students to be first generation college graduates.
· Support teachers in creating innovative lessons and support programs such as the BCS Bookmobile.

Where does the money come from?
We can’t do any of this without you….the donor.  In the 2012-2013 school year alone the Foundation awarded almost $200,000 in scholarships to BCS seniors, over $150,000 in classroom and innovative education grants, and over $13,000 in teacher and employee development programs.

How can you help?
By supporting our fundraisers such as the Amazing Race or purchasing a BCS Discount Card.  (The discount card replaces the School Checkbook fundraiser.) You can also give through a direct donation to the BCS Foundation individually or through your place of business.

Should I give to the Foundation or to an individual school?
You can donate to either or both.  The BCS Foundation gives tax credit to all donations to the schools, school district or Foundation.  Funds given directly to the BCS Foundation are given back to the schools in the form of classroom grants, teacher development programs and scholarships.  Your gift can also be designated for any program or individual school.

What if I am a teacher and I want support in my classroom?
Call us!  We can let you know about all of our grant opportunities, funds that are available and ways we can help spread the word about your funding needs.  We won’t be able to fund everything, but we want to know what your needs are.  We also promote individual school and PTO fundraisers on our website.
