Step into Sarah Camby’s fifth-grade classroom at Haw Creek Elementary School, and you’ll feel the love of learning.

“You’ll see students working together and getting really engaged,” she said. “Learning is a collaborative activity. They really learn how to express their ideas and articulate their thinking. Knowing the answer is great, but knowing the answer and being able to explain it to someone is even better. Those are the kinds of skills they’ll need when they go out into the real world.”

Camby is Haw Creek’s teacher of the year, and just last week she became Teacher of the Year for the whole Reynolds District. Principal Jay Dale wasn’t surprised.

“I think Ms. Camby is the perfect person to represent Haw Creek and the Reynolds District,” he said. “She’s an incredible teacher who deeply cares about her students and sets the bar high for them and for herself.”

“Every child in this city, county and country deserves an excellent education,” Camby said. “The students are my drive, why I get out of bed in the morning.”

Camby, a 2002 A.C. Reynolds High School grad, said she loves teaching fifth grade at Haw Creek.

“Fifth grade is the best grade out of all of them,” she said. “It’s a wonderful place where they’re still kids, but they’re starting to become young adults. I love getting to know them, seeing how much they grow in one year, and preparing them for middle school, high school, and beyond.”

And Camby’s bright personality shines through.

“When my students walk in every morning, I want to be that smiling face that helps brighten their day,” she said. “I know every day when I come to school that I’m making a difference in their lives.”
