Students at Hominy Valley Elementary were surprised Friday morning with the unveiling of a new “Inchy the Bookworm” vending machine, thanks to a donation from Paul and Sue Romesburg and the Buncombe County Schools Foundation.

Instead of candy or chips, this vending machine serves up something even sweeter – the joy of a new story.

Principal Dana Haney revealed the machine to students and staff. Students with August birthdays were the first to use the machine, each selecting a book to take home.

The vending machine will be used throughout the year to encourage reading by allowing students to earn tokens by  achieving goals to “purchase” books. Students will also receive a book on their birthday.

The Romesburgs dedication to literacy doesn’t stop at Hominy Valley Elementary. They have generously donated a book vending machine to 20 elementary schools within Buncombe County Schools, ensuring students across the district have access to books and opportunities to grow their love of reading.
