The Buncombe County Schools Foundation (BCSF) held its inaugural golf tournament fundraiser at the Black Mountain Golf course on Monday. The Foundation raises funds for a variety of BCS initiatives and events such as teacher grants, student scholarships, and programs such as Principal and Teacher of the Year.
“The day was amazing,” said BCSF Director Christy Cheek. “To see everything come together was simply awesome. I love this organization!”
Legendary UNC Basketball Coach Roy Williams served as tournament ambassador. Cheek says, “Coach Williams is a superstar. He believes in public education, and he loves BCS. It was an honor and privilege to have him there!”
Cheek added. “the event was wonderful, and I appreciate everyone who supported it. We could not have done it without all of our sponsors, players, volunteers, BCS Foundation Board members and, of course, Coach Roy Williams.”
Thirty-one teams spent the day on the course while a silent auction provided attendees an opportunity to bid on items such as gift cards and basketballs signed by Roy Williams. The event culminated with an awards ceremony to recognize all the winners of the day, including the first-place team with a score of 55.
“Today was such a great way to celebrate and honor the work that all BCS Employees do on a daily basis,” said Erwin High School Assistant Principal Stefanie Hill. “Public education is hard, but it's also equally as rewarding, and being able to help out with the BCS Foundation to raise money for our students and staff in Buncombe County was a true joy.”
A special thanks goes out to the event’s main sponsors: Mr. and Mrs. Roy Williams, Abbott Construction, Shelia Elingburg and Bob Maxwell, HomeTrust Bank, and Dell Technologies. Food Sponsors were Firehouse Subs, Pepsi, and Food Lion.
“The BCS Foundation is an organization that, as an employee of BCS, you know you can count on,” said Hill. “Christy and her team work tirelessly to rally around students, faculty, and staff of BCS through a variety of support. Today was about being able to give back a small portion to the Foundation. If employees are the heart and students are the brain of BCS, then the BCS Foundation is the arms and legs of BCS - they make things happen!”
