Teaching assistants

Buncombe County Schools Foundation is excited to highlight three teacher assistants who are continuing their education on their pathway to becoming teachers for Buncombe County Schools. In the fall, BCS Foundation was awarded a grant from the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce focusing on recruitment and retention of teachers. Through our “Grow Your Own” program, the BCS Foundation is not only providing teaching scholarships to assist teacher assistants but growing prospective teachers in our high schools as well.

Teacher assistants play such a key role as they support teachers and students in our classrooms. This scholarship provides $1000.00 to continue their quest in obtaining a teaching license. Funds can be used on books, tuition, etc. We are thankful and blessed to have them in our classrooms. This scholarship will also help provide assistance for one teacher to clear her licensure requirements.

Michelle Pickering from North Windy Ridge wrote in her application, "this scholarship will help me to finish my bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education." Margaret Woods from Bell Elementary wrote, "this scholarship will help me ease the burden of continuing education and focus on what is most important to me which is becoming a teacher."

Congratulations to:

Michelle Pickering- North Windy Ridge Intermediate School

Caitlin Colegrove- Leicester Elementary School

Margaret Wood- Bell Elementary School

Gretchen Decker- Estes Elementary School- Teacher Licensure

Again, the foundation is very excited to provide this help to these wonderful educators and thanks the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce for providing the grant to help do so.
